Places & Personalities

Why the destination matters when creating your travel wardrobe

I was sitting on the red beach in Santorini, Greece, people-watching, and I had this thought: how beautiful would it be if people were always dressed in the tones surrounding them?

Like that lady in an olive green swimsuit — she just fit into the landscape and looked amazing. My outfit actually accidentally matched the colour scheme too, echoing the black volcanic stones and the reddish rocks. But then there was a man in what I can only describe as M&M’s colours. It was fun, but somehow it felt like his outfit belonged somewhere completely different, like Times Square maybe.

Of course, I’m not saying everyone should start matching their outfits to the background. Personal style is what makes fashion interesting. But I do think there is something special about when clothes and a place feel connected. When your outfit reflects the mood of a place, you can feel more present, more comfortable and more connected to the moment.

Last week, I had an interesting reminder of this myself. I bought a great pair of shorts and immediately packed them for my weekend in Paris. I was so excited to wear them. But when I got there, I just couldn’t put them on. They were pinkish with stripes, relaxed and playful — and while I loved them, they simply didn’t feel right for the mood I wanted to create in Paris. It wasn’t only about the colour; the whole feeling of the piece didn’t match the vibe of the place. I would have felt a bit off wearing them there. And when I travel, I want to feel completely on!

That’s why I genuinely believe it’s worth thinking not only about the weather when packing, but also about the personality of your destination. It gives you so much creativity and freedom to dress with ease and feel at ease too.

I’ve created a step-by-step packing guide to help you make packing easier and create a travel wardrobe you’ll love wearing. If this idea excites you, you can leave your email at the bottom of the page to receive your free guide.

Enjoy your travels,
